Why Alphamancy?

Alpha — how much you beat the market. -mancy — divination by a specified means. Alphamancy is the art of reading the market through data. It plays on the fact that getting it right can feel like wizardry — but behind the curtain, it's just maths.

The Story

I grew up fascinated by world history and proud of British military heritage. I wanted to be a redcoat. My brother joined at 16, and from that moment my path was set — in theory. In practice, it took my step-father's intervention at 19 to actually get me through the door. I always wanted to serve but I've always been lazy. I joined the infantry, passed basic training, and arrived at battalion thinking I'd made it. My first platoon sergeant changed that. Afghanistan was on, my brother had done multiple tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, and here was my sergeant telling me he'd been fighting in a war at my age. I hoped to deploy. That woke me up.

Over the next decade I served around the world, reached the rank of Corporal, and discovered that leadership was the thing I'd been missing. That same platoon sergeant saw fit to make me a leader before I saw that in myself. My career peaked at the infantry training centre, where I trained recruits. Passing on what I'd learned over a decade in the infantry became something I was genuinely passionate about.

It was during that same posting that I discovered markets. I started trading and investing concurrently — and quickly found out they are very different disciplines. Trading taught me hard lessons about emotional control. With undiagnosed ADD, sitting in front of a chart waiting for a signal was not where I had an edge.

Investing was different. As time went on I leaned further into what was actually working. The returns from my investment portfolio have significantly outpaced anything I made trading. I've beaten the market every year for the last six years — not by timing it, but by understanding the macro environment and owning the right assets for the regime.

The Turning Point

Podcasts from macro analysts and legendary investors became my new research diet. I learned to think in percentages, probabilities, and systems rather than individual stock picks. I could conceptualise the frameworks but lacked the tools to build them. Then AI arrived, and that changed.

AI Changed Everything

AI became my calculator, my research partner, and my engineer. Tools and skillsets usually restricted to a privileged few are now available to anyone with the imagination to use them. The limit is your ability to think.

I created Alphamancy as a project to help me invest better. I realised that by quantifying cross-asset market signals, we can see what the markets are likely to do next. The data is out there — Yahoo Finance, open price feeds — all free, all public. We are truly in the age of information. Data is the new commodity.

The Philosophy

I now know that I know nothing. Having a high IQ can be a disadvantage when you think you know everything. The military taught me discipline. Trading taught me humility. Investing taught me patience. And the older you get, the more you discover about yourself.

There's no better feeling than making your money work for you. It's what separates the rich from the poor. Time is our greatest asset — don't waste it paying for somebody else's dreams.

The Alphameter

The Alphameter tracks six cross-asset indicators (VIX, AUD/JPY, Copper/Gold, Bond Yields, Sector Rotation, DXY) to produce a single risk-on / neutral / risk-off verdict. It's backed by 30 years of data, optimised weights, and tested through every major crisis from the GFC onwards.

It's not a crystal ball. It's a framework for understanding what the data is telling you right now, so you can position accordingly.
